The Colors of the Poodle
Poodles come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, both solids and multicolors.
The only color/pattern that poodles do not come in is merle.
Solid/Base Colors
- Black - White - Gray - Blue: born black and clear over time - Silver: lighter than blue, also born black and clear over time - Brown - Silver Beige: silver with the brown/liver gene - Café au Lait: blue with the brown/liver gene - Red - Apricot - Cream |
Multicolors/Patterns
- Parti: at least 50% white - Abstract: aka tuxedo, less than 50% white - Phantom: aka tanpoints, like the markings of a Doberman - Brindle - Sable: a red base (red, apricot, or cream) with a few black based tips on the hair. Can be clear, tipped, or shaded. - Agouti: aka wolf gray or wild type agouti, looks like a heavier shaded sable (think of a “sable” German shepherd). - Multi-patterned: i.e. phantom + parti |
Black, White, Gray, Blue, Silver, Red, Apricot, and Cream should have black points (noses, lips, and eye rims). Brown and Café is Lait should always have brown/liver colored points. And Silver Beige can have either black or liver points.
(According to the breed standard, Apricots can have liver colored points, but it is not preferable).
